Pathway Health Makes It Easy to Head “Back to School”

AEducationn estimated 75 million children, from pre-K through college, will be enrolled in the 2015 school year and heading back to class this month, according to the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics.

As healthcare professionals, we may have traded school uniforms for scrubs and business attire, but the importance of being a “good student” has not changed. With the many changes impacting post-acute care, there is a tremendous need to keep ahead of the curve on the latest clinical, operation, financial and regulatory information

The Importance of Enrolling Your Team

Research has proven that an adult learner’s success centers on how well they are engaged with the learning experience. Offering multiple options (classroom, individual training, simulation, web-based, etc.) is key to reaching learners “where they are.”

Malcolm Knowles developed adult learning theory in 1984; however, the principles he developed still ring true for today’s engaged learning environment, including:

  • Set a cooperative climate for learning. Make it fun and informative.
  • It is vital to assess the learner’s specific needs and interests. Develop learning objectives based on specific needs, interests, and skill level.
  • Implement/design sequential activities to achieve your overall objectives that support a practical learning process.
  • Work collaboratively to select the right delivery method.

It’s important to evaluate the quality of the learning experience. Because adults learn by doing, effective instruction focuses on tasks that adults can perform, rather than focusing solely on memorization of content. Because adults are problem-solvers and learn best when the subject is of immediate use, effective instruction involves the learner in solving real-life problems.
