Take Charge on National Boss Day

Donna Boss CalmIn honor of National Boss Day today, I wanted to share some data compiled from various surveys by the organizers at National Hug Your Boss Day.

  • 71% of Americans love their boss
  • 90% make their boss coffee
  • 33% never socialize with their boss
  • 51% of employees think their boss needs a hug

But perhaps the most important figure is that 75% of people need to meet with their boss regularly to stay motivated. A couple of my primary responsibilities as Chief Networking Officer has been oversight of human resources and recruitment, so I know how important it is for an employee and boss to build a professional relationship based on guidance, support and growth.

From my years serving as a clinical leader on a national level, I found the following three characteristics are the best way to get your employee-to-boss relationship on the right path.

  1. Know your limits. Understand not only your position (per your written job description), but the responsibilities assigned to your boss.
  2. Communicate regularly. Inform your boss about work that is outside of your skill set or any deadlines you cannot meet.
  3. Remain calm. Listen intently and stay focused on what your boss is asking of you. Remember, you can be calm, but also have great energy!

On National Boss Day, I challenge everyone to show appreciation for the dedication their leadership team offers every day.

  • Ask for more responsibility.
Relieve some of the pressure by offering additional help. Taking on more responsibility will highlight your skills and abilities even more!
  • Be a team player.
Show an interest in the company’s success, and a desire to learn more. Build your reputation as an effective team player…and future leader.
