Members of Advancing Excellence Call for Long-Term Care Policy Change

Recently, the Advancing Excellence in Long-Term Care Collaborative released an open letter to the Biden Administration and a report supporting change in policy and regulation for America’s nursing homes. Written as a collaborative effort among members, this report presents a collective perspective of diverse voices across the long-term care spectrum. While individuals and groups may not agree on every strategy for improving senior care in the United States, they are united in the need for immediate and transformative change. Advancing Excellence hopes this report stimulates conversation, debate, and eventually real reform for all people in the United States who reside in long-term care settings – during this ongoing pandemic and beyond.

Top-level areas for reform include:

  • Better coordination among federal, state, and local agencies during COVID and other potential public health emergencies
  • Improved infection control practices
  • Aligning guidance with person-centered care principles
  • Bolstering the vital frontline caregiving workforce
  • Supporting quality improvement activities
  • Overhauling payment to better align financial incentives with the care metrics that matter most
